MPL Prepares Major Projects to Ease Malé Port Operations
Local Harbor Relief Project and Thilafushi developments set to enhance efficiency
Malé, 26 September 2025, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) is undertaking several key projects to ease congestion and improve operational efficiency across Malé and Hulhumalé ports.
The Local Harbor Relief Project, set for completion next year, will provide significant relief to vessels loading and unloading at Malé, T-Jetty, and Hulhumalé ports. MPL CEO DCP (Retd) Mohamed Rishwan highlighted that the initiative aims to streamline cargo operations and enhance service capacity ahead of the company’s 40th anniversary.
Recent developments include the expansion of North Harbor to accommodate 74 vessels, 54 vessels for cargo and passengers, and 20 fishing vessels. And the opening of the Empty Container Depot in Thilafushi with a total capacity of 2,400 TEUs. The depot, featuring a 60-meter quay wall, was developed with land works completed by MTCC.
These initiatives form part of MPL’s broader plan to relocate the Malé Commercial Port to Thilafushi, a USD 225 million project expected to be completed by 2027, marking a major milestone in modernizing the Maldives’ port infrastructure.
